Rachel Haynes, Medical Provider

Ms. Haynes has served with Kids First Health Care as a nurse practitioner for five years. As the nurse practitioner at Thornton High School (THS), she provides a variety of health care services, including acute care, annual physicals, asthma care, and reproductive health services, to THS and Bollman Tech students. She obtained a Masters of Nursing from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center College of Nursing in 1998 and earned a Doctorate of Nursing at the same university in 2013. Ms. Haynes has devoted her career to serving underserved children and youth ages 0-21.

Amber Smith, Health Educator

Ms. Smith joined Kids First Health Care in September 2018 as a health educator at Thornton High School (THS). Ms. Smith provides one-on-one education on reproductive health, pregnancy prevention nutrition, physical activity, and care for chronic conditions to THS students. She also facilitates the VOIHCE Youth Advisory Board for the THS school-based health center and helps run skill-building workshops in collaboration with the behavioral health provider. She is working towards a master’s degree in public health at the Colorado School of Public Health.

Beverly Garcia, Medical Assistant

Ms. Garcia has served as medical assistant with Kids First Health Care since 2016. At Thornton High School (THS), she assists with a variety of medical tasks, including recording patients’ medical histories, taking vitals, running labs, and more. She has worked at several different Kids First clinics and then transferred to THS when the health center opened in fall 2017. She loves to interact with the students and feels passionate about making sure students know that the health center is a safe space and the staff is here to help them. Ms. Garcia is bilingual in English and Spanish.

Alma Duran, Medical Assistant

Ms. Duran joined the team at Kids First in October 2018. As the front-desk medical assistant, Ms. Duran checks in patients, books appointments, answers the phones, handles clinical paperwork, and more. She graduated from Pima Medical Institute in October 2017 and worked at the Campus Health Center at CU Anschutz prior to joining Kids First’s staff. Ms. Duran enjoys getting know the student population and building good relationships with the patients. Ms. Duran is bilingual in English and Spanish.

Dominga Martinez, Behavioral Health Professional

Ms. Martinez provides mental health services for Thornton High School (THS) and Bollman Tech (BTEC) students at the THS health center. An employee of Community Reach Center (CRC), Ms. Martinez has worked closely with Kids First’s THS team since February 2018. She has ten years of experience as a therapist with CRC, providing individual, group, and family sessions in a variety of programs. In 2009, she earned a Master of Social Work degree from Colorado State University. Ms. Martinez is passionate about helping teens open up about difficult issues and providing them with a safe space to learn and grow.

Dr. Sarah Winbourn, Pediatrician

Dr. Winbourn, a graduate of Vanderbilt University Medical School, joined the staff of Kids First in September 2008 so she has also been with the agency for ten years. She completed her residency through the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Pediatric Residency Program and has practiced at The Children’s Hospital Denver, Denver Health Medical Center and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. In her role as Medical Director, Dr. Winbourn directs medical care at all Kids First clinics and oversees a staff of nine medical providers. Dr. Winbourn is bilingual in English and Spanish.
